Hot
tub spa plumbing comprises of different tubes, pipes, and hoses
connected together through different PVC connectors to ensure
recirculation, heating, and filtering of water throughout the spa. The
spa plumbing systems can use different diameter pipe. But 2 inch pipe is
the most common one and moves twice the amount of water like a 1-1/2
inch plumbing system.
Generally,
there are two types of plumbing systems available for hot tubs. The
first one and the most commonly available on almost every spa is the air
venture system. In this type of system, the air is drawn actually into
the jets water line through one or more adjustable air control valves.
However, water moves through a narrow orifice inside the back of the jet
body that creates a vacuum pulling the air into the plumbing circuit.
The
second type of spa plumbing system is the forced air system – where air
is pushed through a different plumbing circuit which is independent of
the jets water circuit. In this type of spa plumbing system, an air pump
is referred as a blower – which pushes air out of the dedicated air
jets known as air injectors that are usually placed lower in the spa on
the edge of the seats and through a built-in air channel in the
foot-well space.
Though
it’s not common, some hot tub manufacturers actually keep an air blower
on the jets plumbing circuit in order to boost the air at the water
jet, increasing the jet output pressure. It’s referred as turbo charging
of the jets.
Spa Manifold –
PVC
spa manifolds come in 3-way, 4-way, 5-way, 6-way, and many more styles
and types like manifold wyes, true wyes, and side outlet wyes. However,
PVC made spa manifolds are specifically manufactured for the spa
applications and are designed to withstand hot water temperatures
available in a hot tub.
PVC Pipe Fittings –
Spa
and hot tub PVC pipe fittings come in different sizes and shapes. From
plugs to elbows, tees to adapters, you’ll find everything at any
reliable spa plumbing supplier on the market. Check whether the PVC
fittings available are impact and temperature resistant to ensure a
longer life in an outdoor spa application.
Spa Suction Fittings
Different
varieties of spa suctions fittings are available including floor
drains, lo-pro, super hi-flo, as well as various unions and union nuts.
In fact, they also come in different colors and sizes to choose from.
These fittings include the actual fitting grate and fitting nut as well
as gasket. Typically, silicone is used to complete the installation of
suction fitting.
Ball valves and valve gate
Gate
or ball valves are used on either side of the pump. It’s a maintenance
feature which ensures water shutoff while performing applications
without draining the spa. These valves should be left in the open
position while using the spa. However, slice valves are one type of
common gate valve.
Proper
maintenance should be considered in order to insure slice valves work
properly. Remember that, they should be left open as they have a
tendency to get stuck in the mid-range.
